St. Joe’s sailor Lucio Moscati represented the United States on the international stage this summer, competing at the Lightning Youth World Championship on Lake Tuusula in Finland.
The championship, held approximately an hour north of Helsinki, brought together sailors under the age of 21 from three continents, with competitors representing Canada, the United States, Latvia, Lithuania, Greece, Finland, Peru and Ecuador.
Moscati competed as the foredeck aboard a three-person Lightning and helped his boat finish eighth in the 16-boat international field. The American entry recorded a pair of top-three finishes during the regatta, placing second and third in individual races while navigating challenging and frequently shifting wind conditions.
The experience extended well beyond the competition on the water.
Throughout the championship, Moscati embraced the opportunity to connect with sailors from across the world and experience Finnish culture. Competitors spent time together away from racing through activities ranging from saunas and disc golf to biking, campfires and trips throughout the surrounding area.
Those interactions became one of the defining elements of the championship for Moscati, who made a concerted effort to meet and build relationships with fellow competitors. The cultural exchange included sharing food and traditions from home, learning new games and phrases in different languages, and spending time with sailors from several of the countries represented at the event.
Following the final day of racing, Moscati also had the opportunity to explore Helsinki alongside a group of American and European sailors, putting a fitting conclusion on an international experience that combined high-level competition with the relationships unique to world championship sailing.
Moscati’s efforts were recognized at the conclusion of the regatta when his boat received the Tom Allen Jr. Sportsmanship Award, one of only two non-placement awards presented at the championship. Selected through a vote of competitors and volunteers, the honor recognized the American crew for its sportsmanship and commitment to welcoming and assisting others throughout the event.
